MAMMOGRAPHY AS EARLY SCREENING TOOL FOR BREAST CANCER AMONG HIGH RISK WOMEN AT ROYAL MEDICAL SERVICES IN JORDAN

Abstract

Breast cancer (BC) is one of the leading causes of death among Jordanian cancer women; BC screening guidelines have a vital role in health promotion, cancer prevention, and/or early cancer diagnosis. BC screening tests among women with primary family-related i.e. mother and/or sisters in the same age of diagnosis must include an annual mammogram which is required earlier than others.

Objective: To assess mammogram s' findings among high-risk women to develop breast cancer in Jordan.

Methods: A retrospective study for 200 patients with a primary family history of breast cancer aged above 30 years old underwent a mammogram for breast cancer screening, conducted in the radiology department/Al Hussain Hospital and Military Cancer Center at Royal Medical Services (RMS) in Jordan between 2019 -2021.

Results: All participants were female, Married (78.0%, n= 234), and less than half (31.50%, n=61) were the age of (40-49). Furthermore, the analysis revealed that the majority of the 2 mammography results were suspicion mass (85.5%, n=171). More than half of them (55%, n=110) are on stage 4 of breast cancer. However, the right site (45.5%, n=90) was the most frequent site among all mammography scanning. Suspicion mass among females was associated with age (p=.000). Specifically; female patients at 40-49 and 50-59 years old.

Conclusion: Mammography detection of suspension mass of breast cancer is high. Most suspicious masses are discovered at stage four. Therefore, management is essential to develop strategies that will enhance the early identification of cancer by mammography, mainly for high-risk women.
